OLDER PEOPLE

Over 72,000 people are currently living with dementia in London, and this number is set to more than triple within the next 40 years. As a result, we are putting in place steps to make positive changes that will improve experiences for people living with dementia at our Club and in our local community. We are doing this in partnership with a number of local organisations including London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham Council, the Dementia Action Alliance, Innovations with Dementia and Fulham Football Club Foundation.

Earlier this year, we trained 165 staff to become ‘Dementia Friends’ which includes a short online training to help support people attending the Club who may be facing challenges related to dementia. Since then, the Club has embarked on the next phase of this training with a more in depth offer for many staff who require further knowledge. Throughout the sessions, staff will be able to enhance their understanding of dementia and improve their ability to provide support to those who need it.

The Foundation has also launched a monthly lunch to help people from the local community who have dementia, as well as supporting their family members and carers. These events take place for both members and the community and provide a safe place to meet, share, keep physically active, and enjoy the beautiful food and surroundings. The lunches have been a huge success with over 90 older people attending so far, with regular comments about how they are vital in reducing isolation and improving mental health. To find out more about what we are doing or to book onto a month lunch, please email leanne.ayin@hurlinghamclub.org.uk

The next dementia lunches will take place from 11.30am - 1.30pm in The Dining Room of The Hurlingham Club on:

CHILDREN

The Foundation is delighted to be working with local partner, Dance West, who use dance to inspire and engage participants of all ages and abilities across West London.

We support Dance West by promoting volunteering opportunities to our members, who will soon be supporting their latest event - the Dance West Intergenerational Tea Dance in December 2022. We will also be providing a financial donations to ensure that dance west can provide participants with a healthy meal on the day, whilst they are all burning off lots of calories enjoying the music and entertainment on offer!

SEAPIA

Since the Foundation was established, we have support our local partner, SEAPIA, in a number of ways. volunteers have packed food boxes for those most in need, as well as providing local children with Christmas presents, all donated by our staff and members.

In addition, on Wednesday afternoons, a team of Hurlingham volunteers run an educational session at local charity, to assist them with their problem solving skills. This session, devised by Hurlingham member and SEN teacher Patricia Babtie, aims to improve the numeracy, thinking and decision making skills of the children involved. The children are encouraged to enjoy playing with numbers and words, express themselves by demonstrating, drawing and writing & feel confident working with numbers and so reduce anxiety that is often associated with maths.

It has been a success thus far and we will continue to monitor how the sessions are received before extending into schools.
